Personal Opinion (17):Bai Hu Tang–The name of each formula has his secret !
There are many formulas that we use today that are from 1800 years,to be exact,they were invented by Zhang Zhong Jing,one of the best TCM doctor in the Chinese Medicine history. However,today,there are many masters who are trying to ´´invent´´ some new formulas, to add one more herbs or delete them, then those masters gave a new name and said that they created a new formula,even I have seen one book of them in Portugal. In fact,they don´t know really how to use Chinese formula.They should know those classic formulas whose names are including secrets already.
For example,Bai Hu Tang (F47,Five season):
Bai Hu:Bai,white; Hu, tiger;Tang,Decoction.There are two explaination,White tiger,because the emperor herb is Shi Gao (Gypsum, Gypsum Fibrosum),it is one mineral,white,has strong effect to clear the heat,as a ´´tiger´´;
the second explanation is more interesting,Look the picture I put here,white tiger is the symbol of direction ´´west´´,it is the location of Metal,Lung (The lung is the upper source of water) ,it is also the place where the end of sun,to be easily to understand,I could say that west is the place that the Yang is lowing down…,
From the name I can know:This formula can lower down the Yang and produce water.
Then we return back to see this formula,four key symptoms:High fever,Strong sweating,strong thirst,Slippery pulse.
To Lower down the Fever (Yang evil,slippey pulse hers due to Heat evil),Metal is the son of earth,we can know the heat evil is in the stomach,YangMing meridian,because to treat excessive case is to reduce the son (one basic rule of Chinese Medicine);
To produce water for: ( thirst,sweating).
No need to read more about this formula,from the name we can see the effect of this formula.
It is simple,and it is also not simple.But very interesting.
